If you or your child is suffering from the itch of eczema (or another itchy skin condition), here is a very simple home remedy to help soothe the itch instantly, and it harnesses the power of a herb you very likely already have in your pantry - oat seed.

Oats have emollient and antipruritic qualities, meaning they can soothe irritation and take away itch quickly. I love utilizing the power of oats for eczema when my client is in a flare and needs quick relief. Oat seed or oat straw can also be taken as a herbal medicine to help relieve itchy skin conditions.
Here's how you can do it yourself at home:
Oat seed compress
Ingredients:
1 cup of rolled oats (preferably organic)
1 nut milk bag
Water for soaking
Place the rolled oats into the nut milk bag and sit in a bowl. Pour over filtered room temperature water and let sit for 5 minutes.
Discard the water in the bowl. Press the compress to remove excess moisture, then place directly on the itchy skin. The liquid in the compress will be slightly 'milky' looking and feel slippery. Gently move the compress over the inflamed skin.
You can also add this to a bath like a big tea bag. Ensure the bathwater is not too hot to avoid inflaming itchy eczema.
Once finished, discard or compost the oats and sterilise the nut milk bag by soaking it in boiling water for 10 minutes. Repeat as needed.
I'd love to hear from you if you give this a try!
